Don’t let depression get you (or your loved ones) down!

depression

Depression is no joke. You should know that much. The path to overcoming it is not an easy one. But when you get to that day when you wake up and feel like you’re stronger than your depression is the day that’s worth fighting for.

Karma, you sneaky-cheeky rascal!

There is a universal law that says everything that goes around, comes around. And this can apply also to your emotional state. Picture a roller-coaster. Sometimes, our moods go up and other times, according to certain circumstances, they go down.

So hey, they were actually telling the truth when they said life is a roller-coaster!

You only have to grab yourself when you’re up and take a breath when you’re down in order to enjoy the full ride.

Have you stopped to ask yourself the important questions?

When you look around, what do you see? Is everything so bad? Pay attention to the details. Here’s a tip: Write down as many lovely things as you can. They can be anything: things you fancy or nice events in your lifetime. Turn to this journal whenever you get an idea and when you go back to read those thoughts, it will remind you of how good you and your life are.

Nobody’s gonna save you, sweetie.

This doesn’t mean to sound rude. Please understand that your best hero is only you. I’m just giving it a push.

Now, nobody’s saying it’s easy. It’s actually pretty hard, like living with a giant monster and being aware it can take control of you any second. But the moment that you realize you’re not the monster, that you are separate things, you win.

If you get the feeling you are getting overwhelmed by life, you probably need to learn more about how easy it is for depression to get a hold of us. Here, I’ll explain why.

Even though depression is an ailment that affects people from all over the world, it’s still quite misunderstood. Not many people understand it’s a serious condition. And there are occasions when you can even hear someone saying a thing like: Why are you depressed? There’s nothing to feel sad about!

When, in fact, people who suffer from depression don’t even need to have a reason to feel down. But the world doesn’t always see that.

The first step into the darkness is giving up. Click to Tweet

We should never give up. Not ever. Otherwise, many of us wouldn’t even be here in the first place.

In its extreme cases, depression can lead to serious consequences, including alcoholism, drug abuse, and even suicide. This is why it’s so important we understand what a depressed person goes through.

How to help?

According to health.com, there are many useful things you can do for someone who’s depressed. Here are a few examples:

  • Pay attention. When you have a problem, an attentive and understanding ear can be more helpful than we realize.
  • Stay in contact. Make sure they know you’re there for them.
  • Focus on small goals. Living day-by-day is how we all achieve true happiness.
  • Encourage treatment. But don’t force it. Depending on how close you are to the person, it may seem like you can take the primary role in their care, but this is not always the case. So I advise caution in dealing with therapy.
